Christmas is finally here. But if you're like me, you're probably still trying to buy a few last-minute gifts for friends, family, and perhaps that loveable writer in your life.
Some people might think all a writer needs is a laptop, a notepad, a pen, and plenty of ideas. Those certainly are important, but it's not always as simple as that. From office and desk tools to go-to resources, there are so many essentials every writer needs at their fingertips to help them work efficiently, block distractions, and improve their writing.
Here are 8 holiday gift ideas for the writer in your family.
1. Lap Desk
Obviously, you want to use a desk or table to write your best stuff, but sometimes writers find themselves typing away on the couch, in bed, or while on a long car ride. Lap desks are great for making these situations a bit more comfortable. I got mine from Best Buy a few years ago, and it has really come in handy during long car rides or if I want to switch up my surroundings. You can click on the image to learn more.
2. The Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook
Most writers have these handy already. But if they don't, this sure would make for an excellent holiday gift idea for the writer in your family. Stylebooks and style manuals are tremendous resources for those of us who spend our days trying to figure out the English language. The Chicago Manual of Style is used by editors, authors, and publishers of books, etc. The AP Stylebook is for those writers and editors in the newspaper and public relations world.
3. Aqua Notes
Talk about an inexpensive holiday gift idea every writer would love. Someone created waterproof notepads that come complete with suction cups for the shower wall and a waterproof pencil. I swear by them, and every writer should have one. They will never lose another great idea.
4. Varidesk Laptop 30™
If you really want to go all-out and get your favorite writer something nice, how about a compact standing desk? A few years ago, I bought myself a simple laptop version, and it has worked out perfectly. Granted, this isn't a necessity by any means. But it's a luxury that I've found has improved my posture and helps me keep plugging along when I'm tired of sitting.
5. Noise Canceling Headphones
The "noise canceling" or "noise isolating" part is a stretch depending on your surroundings, but these headphones are a great tool for minimizing distractions and improving concentration. This helps writers who do most of their work in a loud newsroom, busy coffee house, or in a home office that sometimes doubles as their kids' play area. I use Beats by Dr. Dre, but there are other great brands.
6. Grammarly
One of many holiday gift ideas for the writer in your family is a subscription to Grammarly. There is a free version of this online grammar checker, but the upgraded subscription is well worth the yearly fee for the simple fact that everyone needs an extra set of eyes on what they write. Grammarly doesn't just correct basic spelling mistakes. It also improves your writing style and picks up on improper word placement and various other things you might never catch on your own. It can be installed on any computer as well as on your phone.
7. A Writer's Block
I didn't even know this existed until I started searching the internet. This is a fun gift that your favorite writer can use as a paperweight or for show on their desk.
8. Adjustable seat cushions
Writing-induced backaches are no fun, especially when your favorite writer goes to stand up after several hours in front of the computer. These can be used with an office chair or while reading and writing on the living room sofa.
There are so many great holiday gift ideas for the writer in your family, including:
* Signing them up for a writing course
* Buying them a few books about writing
* Clever coffee mugs
* Fingerless writing gloves
* General office and desk supplies
* Notebooks
