Thank You, Book Drive for Kids, for Another Amazing Adult Spelling Bee

Writer: Steve GamelSteve Gamel

Book Drive for Kids hosted its third annual Adult Spelling Bee on March 21. And once again, it was a massive success. Not only did the wildly popular nonprofit raise thousands of dollars to support future free book fairs and other initiatives aimed at getting books into the hearts and homes of children, but everyone in attendance left happy and eager to return next year.

That includes me! Not to brag or anything (OK ... maybe just a little), but I was part of the winning team (Beauties and the Beast) with my dear friends Lois Kim and Kristen Gramling.

As I said in a celebratory Facebook post that evening, thank you to Lois and Kristen for being the best teammates this old guy could ask for.

Thank you to Kim Arney with BbK Services 556 for sponsoring us!

Thank you to all the competitors!

THANK YOU to Michelle Cook and everyone at Book Drive for Kids.

The Real Winners Are the Kids!

The fact that this is a CHARITY event should not get lost in all of the competitive trash-talking! Kids are the real reason all of us were there, and that's why this event has been so successful and will continue to be for years to come.

The final round and winning word!

Book Drive for Kids is creating a culture of literacy by providing books for independent reading to disadvantaged children. There is no cost to the kids or their families, just an opportunity to read for pleasure and personal fulfillment.

BDK's reach extends to places like Austin, Houston, and South Texas, and it achieves this thanks to active volunteers and support, donations, and grants from other entities.

The organization's website pointed to studies that suggest independent readers become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. Sadly, many families consider purchasing even one or two books a luxury.

The Adult Spelling Bee was another opportunity to raise funds and awareness about this important cause. That is why I will absolutely do this every year.

Thank you for reading!
